When the ink on either of the cartridges starts to run low, the cartridge can be refilled with ink as an alternative to replacing the cartridges. Each cartridge has a chip that tracks usage to determine when the cartridge will be empty. A refilled cartridge will appear to the printer as low or empty, and will result in an error message that must be circumvented to continue printing.
